Chinese President Xi Jinping had a telephone conversation with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on October 8.

Xi Jinping emphasized that China and Japan are close neighbors, and they are "close neighbors and treasures of the country". Maintaining and developing Sino-Japanese friendly and cooperative relations conforms to the fundamental interests of the two countries and their peoples, and is also conducive to peace, stability and prosperity in Asia and the world at large. At present, opportunities and challenges coexist in Sino-Japanese relations. China appreciates that the new Japanese government attaches importance to maintaining high-level communication between the two countries, and is willing to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with Japan, and promote the construction of Sino-Japanese relations that meet the requirements of the new era in the spirit of taking history as a mirror and creating the future. Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan. I hope that both sides will revisit their original intentions, move in the opposite direction, meet this important historical node together, and open up new prospects for the development of bilateral relations.

Xi Jinping pointed out, China and Japan should conscientiously learn from the positive and negative experiences of bilateral relations, abide by the principles established in the four political documents of China and Japan, earnestly practice the political consensus of "being partners and posing no threat to each other", properly handle major sensitive issues such as history and Taiwan-related issues, manage differences well, grasp the correct direction, and safeguard the political foundation and overall situation of bilateral relations. The two sides should strengthen exchanges in governing the country and coordination of economic policies, jointly safeguard a fair and open trade and investment environment, achieve a higher level of complementary advantages and mutual benefit, and better benefit the two peoples. The two sides should practice true multilateralism, carry forward the East Asian wisdom of harmony but difference and mutual benefit in the light of their fundamental interests and the common interests of mankind, actively promote regional cooperation, coordinate responses to global challenges, and safeguard world peace and stable development. Congratulations to Japan for successfully hosting the Tokyo Olympic Games, and welcome Japan to actively participate in the Beijing Winter Olympics next February.

Fumio Kishida congratulated Chinese National Day. Kishida said that under the current international and regional situation, Japan-China relations are entering a new era. Japan is willing to work with China to draw important enlightenment from the history of Japan-China relations and take the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and China next year as an opportunity to make joint efforts to build constructive and stable Japan-China relations that meet the requirements of the new era. The two sides should manage their differences through dialogue. Japan is willing to continue to strengthen economic cooperation and people-to-people exchanges with China, and closely communicate and cooperate on important international and regional issues such as fighting novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic and climate change. Japan looks forward to the smooth convening of Beijing Winter Olympics.

Both sides agreed that this dialogue is very timely and important, and agreed to continue to maintain interaction and communication through various means to guide the correct development of bilateral relations.
