Xi Jinping Talks with Kiribati President Mamau

Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with Kiribati President Mamau in the Great Hall of the People on the 6th.

Xi Jinping pointed out that at the beginning of the New Year, good news and bad news in the world were intertwined, and unstable and uncertain factors increased. Mr. President's visit to China coincides with Beijing's first snow in the New Year. There is a saying in China that auspicious snow augurs well for a good year. We are confident that China's development will be better in 2020.

Xi Jinping stressed that China and Kiribati resumed diplomatic relations in September 2019 on the basis of the one-China policy, opening a new chapter for bilateral ties. Mr. President and the Kiribati government stand on the right side of history, fully embodied their strategic vision and political courage. China speaks highly of the decision. Since the resumption of diplomatic ties, China and Kiribati have conducted numerous exchanges in different areas and at different levels with fruitful results. Facts proved that it was in the interests of both peoples to restore diplomatic ties, and the bilateral ties enjoy broad prospects. Mamau's visit to China is an important landmark in China-Kiribati ties. China stands ready to work with Kiribati to promote bilateral ties to a new level.

Xi Jinping called on both countries to deepen mutual political understanding, saying that China has always held that all countries, no matter big or small, should be equal and all countries should respect one another's sovereignty and territorial integrity. China adheres to the path of peaceful development, does not engage in "a strong country must dominate", does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries, and does not allow other countries to interfere in China's internal affairs. China respects the country's independent choice of a development path that is in line with its own national conditions and is willing to strengthen high-level and all-level exchanges with Kiribati and share its experience in governing the country. This time, the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding and other documents on the co-construction of "the belt and road initiative" to connect the co-construction of "the belt and road initiative" with the "Kiribati 20-Year Development Plan" and expand practical cooperation. China is willing to encourage more Chinese enterprises to invest in Kiribati. China has approved Kiribati as a destination country for Chinese citizens to organize outbound tourism groups. The two sides can strengthen people-to-people exchanges and local cooperation. China is willing to strengthen communication and cooperation with Kiribati in multilateral mechanisms such as the United Nations and the Pacific Islands Forum, continue to provide support and assistance to Kiribati in tackling climate change within the framework of South-South cooperation, and safeguard the common interests of developing countries.

Mamau said that Kiribati has ruled out interference and made a major decision to resume diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, which is based on its trust and confidence in China. The resumption of diplomatic relations between the two countries is not long, but bilateral cooperation has achieved remarkable results. I reiterate that Kiribati will firmly pursue the one-China policy, respect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, support China's "one country, two systems" policy and support China's great cause of reunification. Kiribati thanks China for its valuable support and looks forward to strengthening cooperation with China in the fields of economy and trade, investment, tourism, fisheries, education, health and infrastructure. Kiribati highly appreciates China's important role in safeguarding world peace and promoting common development. It thanks China for its active commitment to strengthening South-South cooperation, helping small and medium-sized developing countries such as Kiribati to accelerate their development and jointly deal with challenges such as climate change. The Kiribati side is willing to work with China to promote the continuous development of Kiribati-China relations for the benefit of the two peoples.

After the talks, the two heads of state witnessed the signing of a number of bilateral cooperation documents such as the two governments' joint promotion of the "the belt and road initiative" construction.

Before the talks, Xi Jinping held a welcoming ceremony for Mamau in the North Hall of the Great Hall of the People. Peng Liyuan, Yang Jiechi, Ji Bingxuan, Wang Yi, He Lifeng, Liu Xincheng and others attended.
