Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in the Great Hall of the People on December 23.

Xi Jinping welcomed Shinzo Abe to China to attend the 8th China, Japan and South Korea Leaders' Meeting. Xi Jinping pointed out that with the joint efforts of both sides, China-Japanese relations have continued to improve and develop. In June this year, I met with the Prime Minister in Osaka and unanimously agreed to promote the construction of China-Japanese relations that meet the requirements of the new era and jointly open up a new future for bilateral relations. At present, China-Japanese relations are facing important development opportunities. China is willing to maintain close communication with Japan, strengthen political guidance, push China-Japanese relations to a new level and better benefit the two peoples.

Xi Jinping stressed that today's world is experiencing unprecedented changes in a century. The more complicated the situation is, the more we need to maintain our leisurely strategic determination, and the more we need to have a global vision of looking up from afar. In order to plan China-Japanese relations in the new era, we first need to define the strategic consensus. We should think and plan the relationship between the two countries from a global perspective, strengthen communication and coordination on the basis of mutual respect and seeking common ground while reserving differences, and actively promote the construction of a new pattern of joint cooperation and mutual benefit. This should become the common strategic guideline for both sides to develop China-Japanese relations in the new era. The two sides should grasp the correct direction, abide by the principles established in the four Sino-Japanese political documents, properly handle major sensitive issues and consolidate the political foundation of bilateral relations. This is the foundation that both sides must always stick to in developing the new era of China-Japanese relations. It must not be ambiguous or wavered at any time. The two sides should implement the political consensus of "being partners and not posing a threat to each other" between China and Japan, and in the spirit of "turning competition into coordination", push forward the sustained development of bilateral relations along the right track.

Xi Jinping pointed out that the two sides should expand practical cooperation, promote high-quality co-construction of the "the Belt and Road Initiative" and Sino-Japanese third-party market cooperation, strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation in artificial intelligence, big data, Internet of Things and other fields, actively cultivate a two-way open, fair, transparent and non-discriminatory innovation environment, and strive to achieve a higher level of mutual benefit and win-win. We should strengthen exchanges in the fields of culture, tourism, education and other humanities, promote two-way exchanges among young people, expand cooperation between local friendly cities, support each other in running the Tokyo Olympics and the Beijing Winter Olympics well, and consolidate the foundation of friendship between the two peoples. We should enhance mutual trust in security and build constructive security relations more actively. We should demonstrate our international commitment, safeguard multilateralism and free trade, and promote the construction of an open world economy.

Shinzo Abe said that Japan and China have maintained frequent high-level exchanges this year, enhancing mutual understanding. The development momentum of Japan-China relations is good. The development of bilateral relations is of great significance to regional and world peace, stability and prosperity. Japan attaches great importance to and looks forward to President Xi Jinping's state visit to Japan next spring. Japan is willing to communicate closely with China to ensure the success of the visit and build a Japan-China relationship that meets the requirements of the new era. Japan hopes that the two sides will continue to expand practical cooperation in the fields of economy and trade, investment, innovation, tourism, culture and sports. Japan is willing to actively promote third-party market cooperation with China and strengthen communication and coordination on regional issues.
