President Xi Jinping and first lady Peng Liyuan accompanied US President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, on a tour of visiting the Palace Museum on November 8. The couple and the Trumps had an afternoon tea in the Baoyun Building, visited Taihedian, Zhonghedian and Baohedian, the three main halls of the Forbidden City, watched the repair of some historical relics at the conservation workshop and watched a Peking Opera performance.
President Xi Jinping and first lady Peng Liyuan welcomed their US counterparts in the Baoyun Building of the Palace Museum with an informal afternoon tea.
Xi welcomed Trump, on his first year of president of the United States, on a state visit to China and thanked the Trumps’ warm reception in April at Mar-a-Lago in Florida.
Xi addressed that the trip was significant, attracting great concern of China, US and even the world. Xi believed that positive and fruitful results can be achieved, with jointly efforts of both sides, during the state visit. Trump’s trip came soon after the 19th National Congress of Communist Part of China concluded and he was introduced China’s economic and social development as well as remarkable achievements of the congress.
Trump enthusiastically thanked President Xi Jinping for his hospitality and spoke highly of Chinese economic development. He congratulated Xi to become the general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee again and hoped for a successful state visit.
Xi introduced Trump the history of the Palace Museum, which is an indispensable building to understand Chinese historic culture. Afterwards, President Xi and first lady Peng accompanied the Trumps to visit the three main halls of the Forbidden City. They posed for a photo in front of Taihedian, the Hall of Supreme Harmony. During the tour of the ancient palace, they visited and walked along the central axis of Taihedian, Zhonghedian and Baohedian, experiencing Chinese traditional culture of harmony in the names of the three halls. Trump marveled at the grand architectural complex of the Palace Museum and highly praised Chinese traditional culture.
After that, the two couples toured the Conservation Scientific Laboratory, also known as “Relic Hospital”, and watched craftsmen repairing relics, including horologes, carpentries, metal utensils, cerams, textiles and calligraphy and paintings. They also experienced painting repair and watched an exhibition of cultural relics. The two heads of states spoke highly of the deep and extensive cooperation between the two nations on cultural relic repair.
The two presidential couples then came to Pavilion of Cheerful Melodies and watched cloisonné artworks and manufacture skills. They watched three Peking Opera performance, including Flowers in Pear Garden, Handsome Monkey King and Drunkened Concubine. The excellent performances won rounds of applause and cheers.
During the tour, both leaders engaged in a gratifyingly cordial exchange of views on governing and common concerned problems.
Xi’s entourage included Ding Xuexiang, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, and Yang Jiechi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and State Councilor.
US President Donald Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday afternoon and started a state visit to China, welcomed by an elaborate high-level reception of President Xi Jinping.
This was the first time for Trump, as the president of the United States, to visit China and also the first state visit received by China after the successful conclusion of the 19th National Congress of Communist Part of China. Besides the whole state-level activities, the two presidents also conducted small-scale and informal interactions.
During Trump’s visit, the two leaders will conduct strategic communication again on major problems and reach new and important consensuses based on the Mar-a-Lago meeting and the Hamburg meeting, aiming to enhance mutual understanding and friendship and boost exchanges and cooperation in various fields, so as to draw a blueprint for Sino-US relations in a new era of development.
